Sustainable hospitality — where heritage and clean energy meet
Udaipur, the City of Lakes, attracts over 3 million domestic and international tourists annually. Hotels along the Fateh Sagar and Pichola lake fronts are in constant competition, not just on room rates and service quality, but increasingly on sustainability credentials — particularly as international tour operators and corporate travel desks begin mandating green certifications for tie-up hotels. The Lake View Heritage Hotel, a 72-room boutique property on Fateh Sagar Road, was acutely aware of this competitive dynamic.
Mr. Hemant Mewar, the Hotel GM, had been watching electricity bills climb steadily — from ₹1.1 lakhs per month in 2019 to ₹1.5 lakhs per month by 2022, driven by expanded air conditioning coverage across all rooms, kitchen HVAC upgrades, and a new swimming pool heating system. With Rajasthan commercial tariffs at ₹9 per unit and no indication of relief from AVVNL rate revisions, the hotel's energy cost was materially impacting profitability.
The property's architecture presented a unique challenge: as a heritage-style building, the rooftop had several decorative parapets, a rooftop restaurant, and a water feature — all of which required careful navigation. FGPS Solar's project team spent three days on-site conducting a detailed shading analysis, structural assessment, and 3D layout modelling to identify the usable solar footprint without compromising the hotel's aesthetic or the rooftop restaurant experience.
The solution was an 80 kW system distributed across three roof sections: the main building top deck (120 panels), the staff quarters wing roof (48 panels), and a solar pergola over the parking area (24 panels) that also served as shaded parking for guests — a visible sustainability statement that guests regularly commented upon. The solar pergola panels used frameless bifacial glass, adding to the architectural appeal while generating 8–12% additional power from ground-reflected light.
Installation was completed over 10 days during a low-occupancy period in February 2024. The system was energised in March 2024, generating 11,400 units in its first full month — perfectly aligned with the onset of peak tourist season and the corresponding high AC load period.
