Unlocking the energy revenue potential of semi-arid Rajasthan land
Mr. Arjun Singh owns approximately 18 acres of agricultural land near Phalodi Road, Jodhpur — a region that averages a remarkable 6.2 kWh of solar irradiation per square metre per day, among the highest in India. Like many landowners in this water-scarce belt of western Rajasthan, Mr. Singh had traditionally used the land for low-yield kharif crop farming, which delivered modest returns due to erratic monsoons and limited groundwater availability. The land's true value was staring upward at the sun every day.
After reading about agrivoltaic and ground-mount solar projects in the agricultural press, Mr. Singh approached FGPS Solar with a straightforward question: could he convert 4 acres of his least productive land into a solar power plant that sold electricity back to the grid under Rajasthan's Mukhyamantri Solar Pump Yojana and commercial wheeling arrangements? Our EPC team's answer was a resounding yes — and the numbers turned out to be more compelling than even Mr. Singh had hoped.
FGPS Solar designed and built a 2 MW DC-coupled ground-mount solar plant using single-axis tracking technology across the 4-acre site. Single-axis trackers follow the sun from east to west throughout the day, increasing generation by 18–22% compared to fixed-tilt systems — a critical advantage at this scale. The plant uses galvanised steel pile foundations driven directly into the hard Jodhpur soil, eliminating the need for concrete footings and reducing civil cost by 30%. Four 500 kW central inverters feed into a 33 kV step-up transformer, enabling direct grid injection under the Rajasthan DISCOMS' state net metering and open access framework.
The project was developed as a 25-year power purchase model, with FGPS Solar handling all regulatory approvals including RERC registration, JVVNL connectivity agreement, and metering infrastructure. Construction was completed in 48 working days. The plant delivered its first full year of generation in 2023 — 3.12 million units, exceeding the P90 projection by 4%.
